E Minamata disease Q&A

2. Medicine

Q6: Does anyone still develop Minamata disease?

A6: It can be said that there are no new cases, at least in Japan

Commentary:
The acetaldehyde production in Minamata factory of Chisso Corp. that caused methylmercury pollution and Minamata disease was discontinued in 1968.
Since then, the concentration of methylmercury in fish at Minamata Bay has been gradually decreasing, and now there are no fish with mercury content higher than the provisional standard (total mercury: 0.4 ppm; methylmercury: 0.3 ppm) set by the national government.
Thus, there are no new cases of Minamata disease.
