NIMD Forum 2008
Mercury Recycling and Environmental Monitoring for a Sustainable Society

Reports:

  • Date: 27 March 2008
  • Venue: Minamata Disease Archives, National Institute for Minamata Disease (NIMD)
  • Theme: Mercury Recycling and Environmental Monitoring for a Sustainable Society
The international forum so-called “NIMD Forum” is annually organized by National Institute for Minamata Disease (NIMD) to discuss a number of issues related to mercury.

In 2008, NIMD Forum 2008 was organized as a satellite event of 78th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Hygiene (28-31 March 2008, Kumamoto). 62 participants including the participants in the meeting attended the forum. NIMD would like to thank the resource persons and all participants.

Forum summary
In order to tackle various mercury issues, Japan has been the leading country in reducing the sources of mercury pollution, such as chlor-alkali factories, thermometers, and medicines. However, the uses of mercury remain numerous and varied. Therefore, effective recovery and recycling of mercury used in production are necessary for the effective utilization of this resource. This will also ensure that mercury use is limited to the minimum level, facilitating environmental protection.

NIMD Forum 2008 focused on mercury recycling and environmental monitoring for a sustainable society in order to consider the environmentally sound uses of mercury which caused Minamata disease. We discussed about the current environmental activities in Minamata city, zero mercury emission strategy in Sweden, international mercury monitoring and quality control, and environmentally sound management for mercury waste on UNEP project.
