3. Research on the effect of methylmercury on cellular systems, leading to the solution of clinical problems
This research project is aimed at elucidating the effect of methylmercury (MeHg) on cellular systems and the molecular mechanisms of MeHg-intoxication. The results will be developed to grasp of early toxic states, assessment of MeHg-intoxication, and superior methods of the protection against MeHg-intoxication and repair of damage attacked by MeHg. To achieve the objectives, in vitro and in vivo studies are conducted, which include the change in cellular signaling pathways and stress response by exposure to MeHg, the search for biomarkers reflecting MeHg exposure, gene profiling analyses, the mechanism of intracellular demethylation of MeHg, and the effect of MeHg on cell differentiation and neural regeneration. Drugs will be tried for the block of MeHg-intoxication and the promotion of neural regeneration.
