    メチル水銀の胎児影響に関する研究を5年以上に亘り、主に行ってきました。
    メチル水銀への感受性が最も高い胎児に関する研究では、男児は女児よりメチル水銀汚染に弱く、死産・流産による男児の過剰死が、水俣の男児出生性比を低下させたことを疫学研究で示しました。また、メチル水銀は胎盤を介して能動的に移行し、胎児の血液や脳に母親より高濃度に蓄積すること、母乳からの移行は少ないことを論文にしました。これらの知見は、「胎児への影響を考慮した妊婦への魚介類摂取注意事項」(平成17年厚労省)決定における科学的根拠に採用されました。他方、魚類は児の脳に有益なドコサヘキサエン酸(DHA)を含むので、妊婦は水銀濃度が低くてDHAに富む小魚を食べることが児の脳を守る上で有益であるという提言は、米国化学会サイエンス・ニュースで取り上げられました。
    現在は、長年の謎とされていた、水俣病患者におけるセレン濃度上昇と発症におけるセレンの役目という、水俣病における新たな一面の究明に鋭意努力しています。
    水俣病研究への貢献に加え、国際保健機関(WHO)等の緊急要請に応じて、海外における数多くの水銀汚染問題解決に努めた国際貢献が評価されて、平成29年に人事院総裁賞(個人部門)を受賞しました。
